Professor Raj Persad has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon for over 25 years and is Professor at the University of West England, Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol and former Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of the West Indies. He is Royal College Surgical Tutor and Prostate Cancer transformation Lead for the South-West (NHSE Cancer Alliance).

He trained at University College Hospital Medical School and completed his higher urological training in Bristol and Cambridge, with Postgraduate Fellowships at Duke University, USA, Johns Hopkins, USA and Lund University, Sweden. He specialises in andrology, benign prostate diseases (medical and minimally invasive treatments for BPH) and urological cancers including state of the art diagnostics for prostate and bladder cancer. Raj has been in receipt of numerous awards in his career including an MRC award and a Gold award for his services to the NHS. He has previously been secretary for the BAUS Oncology committee and member of the BAUS Andrology committee and has served on the Royal College Cancer services committee.

Professor Persad’s practice is strongly rooted in evidence base from his research active programmes which have produced over 300 scientific peer-reviewed articles as well as 9 books relating to advanced urological practice. He has been awarded £8m in research grants for research and innovation in Cancer and Andrology. He has been a mentor to many consultant surgeons in innovative procedures and cutting edge technology, and has been an advisor to NICE, CRUK, NIHR and National and International Clinical Guideline Committees. He is the Urological Innovations Lead for the University of West of England enhanced robotics programme for both enhanced surgical application and for assisted living for vulnerable patients in the home.

Professor Persad’s sub-specialist skills include:

  • Management of low testosterone and its associated complications
  • Management of Peyronies disease
  • Management of male infertility including microsurgical reversal of vasectomy and microsurgical ligation of varicocole
  • Penile prosthesis implantation

Professor Persad enjoys cycling, tennis and playing the piano. He has also for the last 28 years helped with surgical teaching and training and examining abroad in developing nations of Africa and South America.
