Genital lesions often develop on the head of the penis (glans) or the skin of the shaft or on the foreskin itself.

Genital lesions often develop on the head of the penis (glans) or the skin of the shaft or on the foreskin itself. These may resolve spontaneously or require topical treatment such as topical anti-fungal creams or topical steroids.
If these lesions do not resolve after 4 weeks of treatment, patients should seek medical advice as these may develop into pre-malignant lesions or cancer.
Types of genital lesion

Lichen sclerosus or Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans
This is a benign inflammatory condition of the foreskin which can vary in severity. Mild cases can present with redness or a slightly tight foreskin which responds to topical steroids. However, more severe cases will cause tightening of the foreskin which leads to splitting or bleeding and in these cases the treatment is to undergo a circumcision. It is important to be able to retract the foreskin and clean under it regularly to avoid the development of pre-malignant lesions and penile cancer.
Pre-malignant lesions of the Penis
This group of conditions present as red areas on the glans and inner foreskin or raised brownish papules on the shaft skin or outer foreskin. They are given various names such as PeIN, Erythroplasia de Queyrat if it arises on the glans or inner foreskin or Bowen’s disease if it is on shaft skin. If diagnosed early enough these lesions can be treated with a combination of circumcision or topical treatments or curettage with cautery.
Small papules and pigmented lesions
The majority of these are benign and often a normal part of the anatomy. If there are any suspicious areas or changes in the lesions then a biopsy is recommended which often removes the lesion completely.
