What is the role of a GP? What happens at that first appointment? How can your GP help with Erectile Dysfunction?

Introducing Episode 2 of the Straight to the Point Podcast, hosted by Clinical Nurse Specialist at Coloplast Clare Akers and Consultant Urologist at Kings College Hospital Dr Fabio Castiglione. Their special guest for this episode was London Men’s Clinic’s own expert urologist Mr Rowland Rees.

Last episode started with the fundamentals of Erectile Dysfunction and tackled your frequently asked questions. This episode follows up with a conversation covering the role of your GP in Erectile Dysfunction and what’s likely to happen at your first appointment with the doctor.

It’s likely that your GP will be the first person you speak to regarding Erectile Dysfunction and the issues you’re having, so it’s only natural that you may be curious about how that appointment will go and what will happen in that first initial consultation.

Mr Rowland Rees, Consultant Urological Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton and Andrologist here at LMC joins Coloplast experts to discuss exactly what that the GP’s role is – And that is actually to look at your overall health, not just the erection issues you’re facing.

So what happens in that initial consultation? How will the conversation go and how can the GP help?

In this episode, Rowland, Clare and Fabio talk about the cornerstones of erectile function and how that can be linked to cardiovascular health. In your initial consultation with your GP, they will treat your Erectile Dysfunction as a potential warning sign for heart disease. They will likely check your blood pressure and listen to your heart.

The first line of treatment for Erectile Dysfunction is through lifestyle and diet, so they will provide advice on how to improve these areas. Your doctor will discuss the following lifestyle choices with you:

  • Healthy eating
  • The importance of exercise
  • Reducing alcohol intake
  • Stopping smoking

These aren’t mere suggestions – Making changes in these areas can have a massive impact on your overall health, and hence your erectile function. By improving blood flow for your heart, you can improve blood flow everywhere else. What’s good for your heart is good for your erection so you need to approach erectile health as a whole-body approach.
