One of our esteemed Consultant Urological Surgeons and Andrologists, Mr Hussain Alnajjar recently led a hands-on training in Erectile Restoration hosted by Boston Scientific Urology at their Institute for Advancing Science along with the LMC’s expert team.

What is Erectile Restoration?

Erectile Restoration refers to the methods used to help regain the ability to get and maintain an erection. These methods range from non-surgical options (like medication, regenerative medicine and lifestyle changes) to surgical procedures such as penile prosthesis.

Erectile Restoration is used for individuals with Erectile Dysfunction (ED), to improve sexual function, quality of life, and self-esteem. For those with severe and/or persistent ED that is not helped by medication or lifestyle changes, surgical solutions like penile implants offer a permanent and reliable treatment with high satisfaction rates.

A penile prosthesis works by mechanically producing an erection when natural erectile function does not occur. The most common type is an inflatable 3-piece device consisting of 2 cylinders placed inside the penis, a fluid chamber in the abdomen, and a small pump in the scrotum. When the pump is squeezed, fluid moves from the chamber into the cylinders, making the penis firm and erect. The penis becomes flaccid by pressing a button on top of the pump, which returns the fluid to the chamber. It is important to appreciate that the whole device is inserted through a 3 cm cut on the scrotum or top of the penis and is fully placed internally.

Penile Implant Training with Boston Scientific Urology at the Institute for Advancing Science

With visiting Urologists and Trainees from across the UK and Ireland, Mr Hussain Alnajjar and an expert faculty team delivered an event last month combining practical training sessions with direct guidance from industry specialists.

With a commitment to surgical innovation and education, Mr Hussain Alnajjar and the LMC team trained the next generation of UK penile implanters. This provided participants with a unique opportunity to develop skills and exchange knowledge whilst networking with peers.

It was a pleasure to facilitate such a valuable and engaging learning experience for all involved.
